In a Video, posted on JNS TV, on Sunday May 10, 2026, Alex Traiman, CEO of the Jewish News Syndicate, offered a detailed analysis of why such a base could exist and what operational purposes it might serve, including the possibility that Israel was training Iraqi Kurdish fighters for cross-border missions inside Iran.
Speaking on JNS TV’s Jerusalem Minute, Traiman addressed a Wall Street Journal report claiming Israel had set up a forward support base deep in the Iraqi desert during the recent war with Iran.
While urging caution about the accuracy of the report, he said the operational logic behind such a facility is sound and consistent with Israel’s known approach to covert regional operations.
In his words, Traiman said, “It was also suggested in some of these reports that it was Iraqi Kurds that were provided weapons that were supposed to get inside Iran.
“It was also a possibility that some Iraqi Kurds could have invaded Iran as special forces. They would need to be trained, which means that Israel could have been in those areas either delivering weapons or training forces in order to cross the border,” he said.
Traiman outlined several other reasons why Israel might establish a presence in the remote, sparsely populated desert region near the Iraqi-Iranian border.
He noted that the base could serve as a rescue staging point in the event that an Israeli aircraft were shot down over Iranian airspace, or as a rapid deployment location for special forces missions targeting nuclear materials or other high-value sites.
Traiman added that President Trump had previously discussed efforts to deliver weapons to groups inside Iran as part of a strategy to pressure the regime from within, suggesting the Iraqi Kurdish training mission could be connected to that broader covert policy……See More
