The president was responding to a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in which Kimmel allegedly described First Lady Melania Trump as an “expectant widow.”
In a sharp reaction, Trump said the comment had outraged many people and crossed a serious line.
He stated, “I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale.”
Trump also called on the network and its parent company to take swift action.
“Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC,” he added.
The controversy has generated mixed reactions, with Trump’s supporters condemning the joke, while others argued that late-night comedy often relies on satire and political criticism.
