According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, April 19, 2026, former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye has asserted that he possesses the capacity to defeat President Bola Tinubu in an electoral contest that meets the standards of fairness and credibility, stating that such an outcome would be possible under a transparent democratic process.
He, however, emphasized that his present political orientation is not centered on personal ambition, but rather on the broader objective of strengthening and consolidating a united opposition platform capable of challenging the current administration effectively, while reaffirming his support for opposition realignment ahead of future polls.
He made the remarks during an interview on the Mic On Podcast, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, where he spoke extensively about governance issues and offered pointed criticism of the current administration’s performance.
In the discussion, he also expressed confidence in the potential of alternative political actors, arguing that there are viable candidates outside the ruling structure who could provide stronger leadership options if given the opportunity and support within a competitive electoral environment and the need for competitive leadership alternatives in national governance.

Despite his remarks about his own political strength, Melaye stressed that his immediate concern is not focused on personal ambition or a direct presidential pursuit.
Instead, he highlighted the importance of building cohesion among opposition groups, encouraging unity as a strategic step toward presenting a single, well-coordinated candidate capable of effectively challenging the ruling government in future elections.
On ongoing conversations around possible political coalitions ahead of future elections, Melaye dismissed speculation regarding the formation of joint tickets or alliances driven by individual interests.
He stated that such discussions should be guided primarily by considerations of national interest, suggesting that political decisions should prioritize collective benefit over personal political calculations or ambitions within emerging opposition arrangements.
He further raised concerns about what he described as the increasing visibility and involvement of Seyi Tinubu in public political and civic engagements.
