We Will Not Allow Iraq’s Terrorist Militias, Backed By Iran, To Threaten American Lives -Bessent

According to a report by The Times Of Israel on April 17, 2026, the United States has imposed sanctions on seven senior commanders of Iraqi militia groups backed by Iran, including Kataeb Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq, accusing them of planning and carrying out attacks against US personnel and coalition forces across the region.

Officials said the move is part of a broader strategy to counter Iran’s growing influence in Iraq and to deter further attacks on American interests and allied forces. They added that Washington views these militias as key instruments in Iran’s regional network of armed groups.

The sanctions are also intended to intensify economic pressure on Tehran’s allied organizations by restricting access to international financial systems. US authorities warned global banks and companies to avoid any transactions or cooperation with individuals or entities linked to the designated militia commanders.

“We will not allow Iraq’s terrorist militias, backed by Iran, to threaten American lives or interests,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent says. “Those who enable these militias’ violence will be held accountable.”

Officials further explained that the action reflects a wider US policy shift that relies heavily on financial restrictions alongside military deterrence to disrupt Iran-aligned networks. They noted that targeting senior commanders is aimed at weakening operational coordination and funding channels within the militias.

Washington also stressed that it will continue working with regional and international partners to monitor militia activity and prevent further escalation in Iraq and neighboring countries.
