According to a report by Al-Jazeera on Tuesday, April 14, 2024, Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Lapid, has sharply criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Italy’s move to suspend the automatic renewal of a long-standing defence cooperation agreement with Israel.
Lapid described the decision by Italy as “yet another embarrassing failure” of Netanyahu’s government, as well as of Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, whom he referred to as ineffective in managing Israel’s diplomatic relationships at a critical time.
Taking to social media platform X, the opposition leader argued that the current Israeli administration has allowed strategic partnerships to deteriorate even with countries traditionally considered friendly or aligned with Israel’s security interests.
“Meloni is not a left-wing-progressive European leader; she is in the right-wing-conservative camp and understands the need to fight terrorism,” Lapid wrote, referring to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He suggested that ideological alignment alone had not been enough for Israel to maintain stable diplomatic and defence ties under the present government.
Lapid further accused the government of failing to effectively promote Israel’s interests abroad, claiming that this diplomatic setback demonstrated broader weaknesses in the country’s foreign policy approach. According to him, Israel has struggled to maintain influence and goodwill even among allies that have historically supported its security and defence priorities.
The controversy centres on Italy’s decision to suspend the automatic renewal of a defence agreement with Israel that has been in place since 2006. Under the terms of the agreement, renewal typically occurs every five years without additional legislative hurdles. The framework covers cooperation across multiple areas, including defence industry collaboration, military training and education, joint research and development initiatives, and information technology exchanges.
The arrangement has long been regarded as a cornerstone of bilateral defence relations between the two countries, reinforcing cooperation between military institutions and facilitating joint technological advancement.
While Meloni’s government has generally been viewed as one of Israel’s closest partners within Europe, recent developments indicate growing political tension. In recent weeks, Italy has increasingly voiced concern over Israeli military actions in Lebanon, signalling a more cautious and critical stance compared to its previously consistent support…..See More
