A prominent Emirati academic and former adviser to the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, has called for a reassessment of the United Arab Emirates’ security arrangements, suggesting that the country no longer needs American military protection and should consider closing US bases on its territory.
In remarks reported by Reuters, Abdulla, a Professor of Political Science, argued that the UAE has proven its ability to defend itself effectively in the face of what he described as Iranian aggression. He stated that recent developments demonstrate the country can secure its sovereignty “with distinction,” reducing reliance on external forces.
Abdulla emphasized that while the UAE may not require American troops, it still benefits from access to advanced US military technology. He noted that the country’s focus should shift toward acquiring “only the best and latest weapons” from the United States, rather than maintaining a foreign military presence.
Describing American bases as a “burden” rather than a strategic asset, Abdulla suggested their continued existence may no longer align with the UAE’s evolving defense posture. His comments reflect a broader conversation within parts of the Gulf region about redefining long-standing security partnerships.
