According to the Times of Isreal, tensions in the Gulf have surged after US President Donald Trump announced a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following the collapse of diplomatic talks with Iran, raising fears of a wider international crisis in one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes.
The Strait, through which roughly a fifth of global oil shipments pass, has become the centre of a fast-moving standoff between Washington and Tehran.
In a strongly worded post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared: “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of blockading any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”
He also warned that the US would take action against vessels allegedly cooperating with Iran, adding: “No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.
The US president further escalated tensions by threatening military action against any attacks on American or civilian shipping, stating: “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be blown to hell!”
The announcement follows reports that peace negotiations between the two sides have broken down, leaving a fragile ceasefire arrangement hanging in the balance.
Trump also claimed that allied nations, including the United Kingdom, are being drawn into the response effort. Speaking to Fox News, he said: “I understand that the UK and a couple of other countries are sending minesweepers,” referring to operations aimed at clearing potential explosive threats in the waterway.
Iran has dismissed the US move, with its embassy in Thailand ridiculing the announcement as “so comical that we don’t even have a meme for it.”
The UK government has not yet confirmed its involvement.
With global oil routes potentially at risk, the blockade marks a dramatic escalation in already fragile US-Iran relations, increasing concerns over security, energy supplies, and the possibility of further military confrontation in the region……See More
