Dr. Ugo Onumonu, the Head of Department of History and International Studies at Adeleke University in Osun State, has stated that there is a river that links the Oguta Lake to the Atlantic Ocean
In an interview on the State Affairs Show with Edmund Obilo, Onumonu said during the civil war, the 3rd Marine Division of the Nigerian military were able to invade Oguta in the eastern region with warship via the river that connects Oguta Lake to the Atlantic Ocean.
Onumonu said after a few days, Ojukwu arrived from Umuahia and displaced the 3rd Marine Commando from Oguta. He stated that a part of that warship, or a replica of it, is now displayed in the war museum in Umuahia. Onumonu said that these events are well-recorded and form an important part of Nigerian history.
In Onumonu’s words: “During the civil war the 3rd marine commando were able to invade Oguta for a few days before Ojukwu came from Umuahia and displaced them. They came in there with their warship.
