NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has said that three state governors warned him not to visit their states because they could not guarantee his safety.
Speaking during an interview shared by Advocacy for Good Governance, Obi said there was no need to further explain his earlier statement that he fears he may not be alive to witness the 2027 presidential election. He said the warnings from the governors spoke for themselves.
According to Obi, no governor, security agency or government official has contacted him to ask about the threats or investigate what happened.
He argued that such a situation would be unacceptable if he were Nigeria’s president. Obi said that if a governor publicly declared that they could not guarantee the safety of a visitor, he would ensure the person travelled to that state safely the same day, describing such a statement as irresponsible.
Obi also said he had been prevented from entering several institutions across the country, adding that these experiences showed why he was concerned about his safety.
To explain his frustration, he recalled an incident involving an uncle who was handcuffed while people still asked if anything was wrong. Obi said the story reflected how people were demanding further clarification despite what he described as clear signs of the challenges he had faced.
