Mr. Olatunde Zacchaeus, a teacher who was among the victims of the abduction at a secondary school in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has recounted how his desperate attempt to escape the attackers aggravated an existing arthritis condition in his left leg.
Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM on Friday, 17 July, 2026, Zacchaeus explained that he had no choice but to flee after armed men invaded the school. He said he joined students and other staff members in escaping through a window, despite already suffering from arthritis that had left him struggling to walk before the incident.
According to him, “When I jumped through the window and wanted to land, I landed with left leg I had arthritis. So immediately I knew there is problem today.”
The teacher said the impact of landing on his injured leg immediately caused him concern, but he had to ignore the pain because escaping the attackers was his priority. His account illustrates the difficult decisions victims were forced to make as they sought safety during the attack.
Zacchaeus’ testimony provides further insight into the traumatic experience of teachers and students caught in the Oriire school abduction.
