Zainab Buba Galadima recently shared her experience during an interview with Political Advantage Platform, talking about how she became a councillor without any financial support from her father.
She explained how politics in Nigeria often depends on money. According to her, “Nigeria is so structured in such a way that it’s only money that can help you.” Most people who win elections either have their own money or receive help from supporters.
Zainab made it clear that she didn’t have money of her own. “My father didn’t give me one Naira,” she said. But “people contributed Money and gave me money.” They contributed and raised money to support her campaign. Thanks to their help, she won the election and became a councillor.
Because no individual or political godfather sponsored her, she said she was only answerable to the people and focused on serving them. However, her time in office came with challenges. Out of 12 councillors, she was the only one from the opposition party. That made it hard for her to make a big difference.
