Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, said her husband had willingly returned to Nigeria and presented himself to the authorities after receiving their invitation, insisting that this demonstrated his commitment to facing the legal process.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV, Asiya stated that bail exists to ensure a defendant appears in court and maintained that, considering his previous conduct and years of public service, he deserved to be released on his own recognizance. She also said she believes there may be some politics surrounding her husband’s arrest.

In her words, “The courts are allowed to impose terms. What is the essence of bail? Bail is just to ensure that the defendant or the accused person is present during trial. Malam presented himself when he got the invitation. He responded and said, ‘I’m coming.’ He came. He submitted himself.
Would a person who intended to jump bail willingly return? He was out of the country. He could have stayed there, but he came back. And it’s not like there has been any previous occasion when he jumped bail. In that regard, you would have thought that somebody who had achieved the status of a former governor of a state and a former minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would be granted his freedom on his own recognizance.
