According to a video on MSNBC, on Monday June 1, 2026, Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts raised a troubling and consequential point about the unintended outcomes of United States military operations in Iran, stating that the killing of senior Iranian officials’ family members during the conflict had directly contributed to the rise of a more extreme and personally motivated leadership now governing the country.
Moulton made the remarks during a broader discussion about the failure of the Trump administration’s Iran strategy, particularly its stated goal of achieving regime change.
While the congressman acknowledged that the leadership in Tehran had indeed changed, he argued forcefully that the new government poses a far greater threat to American and global security than the administration it replaced.
In his words, Rep. Seth Moulton said, “And just in case he wasn’t hard-line enough, we killed his immediate family. So now he and the IRGC, the revolutionary guards are essentially running the country,” he said.
Moulton described this outcome as a direct and foreseeable consequence of the manner in which the military campaign was conducted.
By eliminating family members of the new Iranian leadership, the United States had, in his view, transformed an ideological adversary into a deeply personal one — a leader with both political and personal reasons to oppose any accommodation with Washington.
The congressman also highlighted the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s most powerful military and political institution, noting that the IRGC now exercises significant influence alongside the new civilian leadership.
Together, he argued, these two forces represent a more cohesive, more radical, and more capable governing structure than existed in Iran before the war. Moulton said this outcome stands as one of the most damaging strategic miscalculations of the entire conflict…..See More
