Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to the political setback suffered by Yusuf Gagdi after the lawmaker reportedly lost his reelection bid during the APC primaries in his constituency.
In a post shared on his X account, Sowore recalled a past television interview where Gagdi questioned why the Nigeria Police had not taken extreme action against him for demanding the retirement of former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, after the expiration of his legal tenure.
Sowore criticized what he described as a growing culture of intolerance and abuse of power among some Nigerian politicians. According to him, it was disturbing that a public official could support the use of force against a citizen exercising constitutional rights.
The activist said Gagdi’s recent political defeat showed that power and influence do not last forever. He added that the same politician who once defended police actions and political authority was now facing rejection within his own political camp.
In his words, “Yusuf Gagdi, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, once openly wondered on national television why the Nigeria Police under the now disgraced and illegally tenured IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, had not simply shot and killed me for demanding that he retire after his lawful tenure expired. Today, the same Yusuf Gagdi who defended illegality and police impunity has suffered political humiliation in his own backyard.”
