An ADC chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating efforts to destabilise opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking with Symfoni, he alleged that there was a coordinated attempt to weaken the ADC, a claim he said had also been made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He argued that similar tactics were previously used against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the appointment of Nyesom Wike as minister and remarks linked to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, suggesting support for President Bola Tinubu instead of fielding a candidate.
Okonkwo maintained that the ADC remained the only strong opposition and dismissed claims of internal crisis. Reacting to the attack on the residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odige-Oyegun, he insisted it was not infighting but an external attack, which he described as an assassination attempt. He noted that some party leaders were present during the attack, which involved gunshots, but insisted that it was not an internal matter as claimed by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
He questioned why no arrests had been made by the state government despite the incident occurring in broad daylight and involving unmarked vehicles, suggesting possible state complicity.
He also cited an interaction with Senator Roland Owie to argue that party members present during the incident were loyal and unlikely to conspire against the party.
Further talking, he said, “There is nothing like an internal crisis in Edo. That governor—I have always said—even his own party, APC, regards him as insignificant. Was he not at the APC convention where the chairman said they were being treated as insignificant and that they were left in overflow?
“This is a governor who wears Tinubu’s cap and has ordered everyone to wear Tinubu’s cap. An overflow governor. Overflow APC. That is where they put them. And you know why? Because they know that is their capacity.
“So, APC is not even recognizing them as important. This is the chairman of APC saying it, not me. He asked why they should be treated as unimportant.”…..See More
