According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Thursdays, July 16, 2026, a senior adviser to Iran’s parliamentary research center has said Tehran can continue diplomatic engagement with the United States while maintaining military preparedness, arguing that negotiations and defence readiness can exist at the same time.
Mohammadreza Talebinejad made the comments on Thursday in remarks reported by Iran’s state news agency IRNA, stating that the country’s national interests could be pursued through diplomatic channels without abandoning security preparations.
“If national interests can be secured through non-military means, no one prefers war to negotiations,” Talebinejad said. “One can pursue negotiations with dignity while simultaneously being prepared for war.”
The Iranian official argued that diplomacy should remain an option when it serves the country’s interests, while stressing that maintaining military readiness is necessary in the face of potential threats.
Talebinejad also criticized individuals and political groups who oppose negotiations, saying their position offered no realistic alternative other than confrontation.
He called on political factions to avoid weakening government officials involved in diplomatic efforts.
His remarks come as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high, with both sides facing disagreements over security issues, regional influence, and Iran’s nuclear programme.
Despite ongoing disputes, Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that diplomatic channels could remain open under conditions that respect the country’s sovereignty and national interests.
