Keane: I Prefer We Finish Iran Off, Weaken Them So Badly That Their Economy Would Collapse

According to a video on Fox News, on Monday June 1, 2026, Retired four-star General Jack Keane stated openly that his preferred course of action during the Iran conflict had been to continue military operations until the Iranian regime was brought to the point of complete economic collapse, a position he acknowledged was not the path ultimately chosen by the administration.

General Keane, Fox News senior strategic analyst and chairman of the Institute for the Study of War, made the candid admission during a live televised interview, offering a frank assessment of the strategic choices made by the United States as it now pursues a diplomatic resolution with Tehran following 37 days of sustained military operations.

He acknowledged, however, that the situation has moved forward and that the focus must now shift to achieving the best possible diplomatic outcome given current realities.

In his words, General Jack Keane said, “What they were doing is laying mines in a place where they had already laid some mines and they were thickening that capability to deny that lane to obviously transit capability of the oil tankers.

“I preferred to certainly finish off Iran and weaken them so that they would be in economic collapse and hopefully the Iranian people will be able to deal with that. But that’s not where we are. Let’s deal with where we are,” he said.

Keane went on to argue that the diplomatic path now requires firm leverage, particularly through the maintenance of financial pressure, frozen assets, and the continued economic blockade.
