According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Saturday, May 09, 2026, A leaked document reportedly linked to Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, has outlined a proposal to provide Iran with advanced drone technology and specialised operational training amid rising tensions involving the United States in the Gulf region.
According to details contained in the document, Russia proposed supplying Tehran with approximately 5,000 short-range fiber-optic guided drones designed to resist electronic interference. Unlike conventional radio-controlled systems, the drones are connected through fiber-optic cables, making them significantly more difficult to disrupt through jamming technology.
The report stated that similar drone systems have previously been deployed by Russia during military operations in Ukraine.
The leaked material also referenced plans involving an unspecified number of longer-range drones equipped with satellite-guidance capabilities. Some reports associated with the document suggested the systems could include communication terminals comparable to satellite-based technologies used for long-distance coordination.
In addition to equipment transfers, the proposal reportedly included a training programme for Iranian drone operators. One option under consideration involved recruiting participants from an estimated 10,000 Iranian students studying at Russian universities, alongside other screened candidates. The document indicated that trainees would undergo loyalty and background assessments before receiving instruction on operating both short-range and long-range drone systems.
The document further claimed the proposed systems were intended to strengthen Iran’s ability to respond to potential US military operations in strategic areas, including the Strait of Hormuz and Kharg Island.
It also highlighted the vulnerability of slow-moving amphibious vessels to coordinated drone swarm attacks launched from concealed positions several kilometres away……See More
