According to a report by Punch on Sunday, April 26, 2026, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come to the defense of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, following criticism surrounding his remarks at the Opposition Political Parties National Summit held in Ibadan.
In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Federal Government of misrepresenting the governor’s comments for political purposes. The party clarified that Makinde’s reference to the historical “Operation Wetie” crisis was not intended to incite violence but to caution against the consequences of poor governance and political intolerance.
Ememobong explained that the governor’s remarks were meant to draw attention to the lessons of history, particularly how unresolved grievances and irresponsible leadership can escalate into widespread unrest. He emphasized that the reference was a call for reflection and responsible governance, rather than a threat. According to him, only individuals with ulterior motives would interpret the statement negatively.
The PDP further maintained that historical events should serve as a guide for present-day leadership, stressing the importance of learning from past political crises to prevent a recurrence of violence. The party argued that Makinde’s comments were rooted in a desire to promote stability and accountability within the political system.
In addition, the statement criticized the ruling APC, accusing it of contributing to rising political tensions through what it described as authoritarian practices and governance shortcomings. The PDP suggested that current political developments bear similarities to past periods of unrest, which were often fueled by exclusion and mismanagement.
The opposition party also questioned the APC’s credibility in criticizing Makinde, pointing to statements made by its members during their time in opposition, which it claimed had previously heightened political tensions.
Meanwhile, the APC in Oyo State dismissed the Ibadan summit as lacking significant political influence. The party also cautioned against the use of inflammatory language ahead of the 2027 general elections, assuring the public that security agencies and electoral authorities would work to ensure a peaceful electoral process……See More
