According to a report by Fox News, on Thursday April 30, 2016, In a blunt assessment of the shifting geopolitical landscape in the Middle East, Retired Vice Admiral Mark Fox told ABC’s Martha Raddatz that the current Iranian leadership is teetering on the edge of a historic downfall, comparing the situation to the sudden disintegration of the Soviet Union.
The former commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command argued that the Islamic Republic’s internal decay and malicious actions against its own citizens have reached a breaking point, creating a unique opening for Western intervention and regional stability.
Drawing on historical parallels, Fox cautioned that while the timing of a regime’s fall is often impossible to predict, the structural failures are undeniable.
“I can’t see how any of the existing regime could stay in power,” Fox stated. “Remember this, Martha, at the end of the Cold War, we were all surprised when the Soviet Union collapsed of its own corrupt weight. We also were surprised when the Saudi regime collapsed in Syria.”o
Fox’s comments suggest that the outward appearance of control maintained by Tehran masks a hollowed-out infrastructure, much like the USSR in the late 1980s.

“I think this is one of those things that you can’t necessarily put a timetable to it, but you can definitely anticipate that this is corrupt, a malicious regime. They have killed thousands of their own people,” Fox noted.
Rather than viewing the current instability as a purely military challenge, Fox framed it as a rare chance to reshape the Middle East for decades to come.
