According to a report by The Times of Israel on Monday, May 18, 2026, Iranian sources have claimed that the United States has agreed to temporarily freeze sanctions on Iranian oil exports and has shown flexibility regarding limited civilian nuclear activity as part of ongoing negotiations between the two sides.
The report, which cited Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency and a senior Iranian source speaking to Reuters, indicated that Washington would issue waivers through the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control while diplomatic talks continue. The move is being described by Iranian sources as a potential concession aimed at keeping negotiations active.
According to the Iranian source cited, the proposed arrangement forms part of a broader diplomatic exchange in which Iran recently submitted a new 14-point proposal through Pakistan.
The proposal reportedly focuses on key economic and regional priorities, including efforts to secure an end to hostilities, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of maritime-related sanctions.
The same sources suggested that the most contentious aspects of the talks, particularly those relating to Iran’s nuclear programme and uranium enrichment, have been deliberately postponed for discussion in later rounds of negotiations.
This approach is seen as an attempt to advance progress on less divisive issues before addressing the core disputes that have historically stalled diplomatic efforts.
Separately, Iranian officials quoted in the report stated that Washington has indicated openness to allowing Iran to continue limited peaceful nuclear activities, provided these remain under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
While the reported US position has not been officially confirmed by Washington, the claims reflect ongoing efforts to find common ground on economic sanctions and nuclear restrictions…….See More
