According to Aljazeera News, Russia’s top diplomat has issued an urgent call to de-escalate the growing military confrontation with Iran, warning that the situation in the Gulf has reached a critical threshold.
In an unscheduled statement on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the ongoing hostilities targeting the Islamic Republic must cease without delay. He explicitly called for a ceasefire, adding that all parties must guarantee the free movement of commercial shipping.
“The war on Iran must stop immediately and a ceasefire should be reached, Lavrov said, according to state-run news agencies. He further stressed that there must be no disruptions or obstacles in the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most vital chokepoint for oil transit.
Lavrov’s appeal comes as Washington signals mounting impatience with Tehran. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump warned that he was not going to be much more patient and urged Iran to make a deal. Preliminary reports following recent US-Israel strikes have cited thousands of casualties, though those figures remain unverified.
Moscow has long maintained ties with both Tehran and Gulf Arab states. However, Russia has faced criticism from Western capitals for failing to restrain Iranian proxies in the region. Lavrov’s latest comments appear aimed at preventing a wider energy crisis, as any blockage of the Strait of Hormuz could send global oil prices skyrocketing.
