Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has claimed that the United States (US) suffered major military losses during the war with Iran, saying the American Congress had now acknowledged the destruction of dozens of aircraft worth billions of dollars.
In a statement posted on his verified X account on Tuesday night of 19 May 2026, Araghchi said Iran’s military operations during the conflict demonstrated the capability of the country’s armed forces, and signalled that Tehran had gathered new experience that could shape future confrontations.
“Months after initiation of war on Iran, US Congress acknowledges loss of dozens of aircraft worth billions,” Araghchi wrote.
The Iranian foreign minister also claimed that Iran became the first country to successfully bring down an American-made F-35 fighter jet during active conflict.
“Our powerful Armed Forces are confirmed as 1st to strike down a touted F-35,” he said.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 is regarded as one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in modern military aviation and has been used by the US and several allied countries. Iran has repeatedly claimed during the conflict that it targeted and destroyed multiple aircraft, including stealth jets, although several of those assertions have been disputed by Western officials.
Araghchi’s latest remarks come amid continued tensions between Tehran and Washington following months of military exchanges, regional instability and diplomatic disagreements tied to Iran’s nuclear programme and security issues in the Middle East.
The Iranian minister also suggested that Iran had improved its military readiness and operational strategy from lessons gained during the conflict.
“With lessons learned and knowledge we gained, return to war will feature many more surprises,” he added.
The comments are expected to add to the already strained relationship between Iran and the US as discussions over regional security and future diplomatic engagement remain uncertain.
Araghchi has in recent weeks continued to defend Iran’s military posture while criticising Washington’s role in the conflict. Iranian officials have maintained that the country would respond forcefully to any future military action, while US officials have continued to accuse Tehran of destabilising activities across the region……See More
