According to a report by Anadolu Agency published on Saturday, May 9, 2026, Reports of a secret Israeli military operation in Iraq have stirred fresh concerns across the Middle East after claims emerged that Israeli forces allegedly targeted Iraqi troops to protect a covert desert facility linked to operations against Iran.
The Wall Street Journal revealed that Israel reportedly built a hidden military base in a remote Iraqi desert area shortly before tensions with Iran escalated. Sources familiar with the matter claimed the facility was created with the awareness of the United States and was intended to support Israeli air missions and special operations aimed at Iran.
The report alleged that Israeli forces carried out strikes against Iraqi soldiers who were close to uncovering the secret installation. The action was reportedly meant to stop the exposure of the base and maintain operational secrecy.
The facility was said to have functioned as a logistical center for the Israeli Air Force, while also serving as a support station for special forces involved in long-range missions. Search-and-rescue teams were reportedly stationed there to recover pilots in case aircraft were lost during operations, although no rescue mission was eventually needed.
The publication also claimed that after a US F-15 fighter jet crashed near Isfahan, Israel offered assistance to American forces. However, US troops reportedly rescued the two crew members without outside help.
Suspicion over the existence of the facility reportedly increased in early March after Iraqi state media reported unusual helicopter activity observed by a shepherd in the desert region. Iraqi authorities later launched an investigation, but Israeli strikes allegedly prevented Iraqi forces from reaching the suspected location.
Iraqi officials condemned the reported operation, confirming that one Iraqi soldier was killed. Qais Al-Muhammadawi, deputy commander of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command, stated that the mission was conducted without Iraq’s approval or coordination…….See More
