A trauma counsellor and addiction therapist, Christie Bature, has shared a personal story about how addiction affected her family, highlighting the long-term consequences of early exposure to harmful substances.
Speaking during an episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast by Glitch Africa Studios, Bature recounted how she and her younger sister were exposed to smoking at a very young age. “My younger sister started smoking at the age of 7 and never stopped until it killed her at 44,” she said.
According to her, the experience began in childhood when they experimented with smoking out of curiosity. While she stopped after the first attempt, she explained that her younger sister continued, which later developed into a long-term habit.
Bature noted that the situation reflects how individuals respond differently to the same exposure. She explained that some people may walk away from harmful habits, while others may develop a strong dependence.
She used her personal experience to highlight the concept of addiction vulnerability, stressing that early exposure can have lasting effects, especially when there is no proper guidance or intervention.
Speaking on the broader issue, she warned that substance abuse among young people is a growing concern. Environment plays a huge role in children’s exposure to these vices, hence she emphasized the need for parents and guardians to pay close attention to early warning signs and provide the right support.
Her account adds to ongoing conversations about addiction, prevention, and the importance of protecting children from early exposure to harmful substances…..See More
