According to a report published by Daily Post on Monday, June 10, 2024, Primate Elijah Ayodele, the Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu regarding the ongoing negotiations over the national minimum wage.
Primate Ayodele cautioned the President against politicizing the issue, urging him instead to focus on effective price control measures.
In a statement released by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, Ayodele emphasized that simply raising the minimum wage without addressing the soaring cost of living would not alleviate the financial hardships faced by Nigerian workers. He acknowledged that labor unions had initially demanded a steep increase but have since moderated their request to a more reasonable level.
“Tinubu must not play with the worker’s minimum wage. Their initial request was too much but they have come down to a reasonable level now and I want to advise President Tinubu not to play politics with it by trying to divide them,” Ayodele stated. “However, let there be price control because without it, minimum wage is zero no matter the amount.”
The labor unions are currently demanding a new minimum wage of N250,000, while the Federal Government has proposed a figure of N62,000. This proposal has met resistance from state governors, who argue that their budgets cannot accommodate such an increase.
Ayodele’s remarks highlight the importance of comprehensive economic reforms, suggesting that without effective management of commodity prices, any increase in wages would be insufficient to improve the living conditions of Nigerian workers.……See More
