According to a report from Channelstv, Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), announced that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has committed to paying a minimum wage exceeding N60,000 for Nigerian workers.
This development followed a crucial meeting between labor leaders and government representatives on Monday, June 3.
Osifo explained that the labor unions had been advocating for a substantial wage increase and had shut down the Nigerian economy on Monday, June 3, as part of their efforts.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday night, June 4, Osifo stated that the labor unions never wanted to go on strike but felt compelled to do so.
During the Monday meeting, significant progress was made, achieving two main outcomes: an increase in the government’s initial proposal of N60,000 and a commitment to execute the plan within one week.
Osifo highlighted that, during the meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, and the federal government team, President Tinubu committed to a minimum wage higher than N60,000.
Osifo added, “If what was achieved on Monday, June 3, had been reached on Sunday, there would have been no need for the strike, as it is always our last resort.”
The key achievements from the labor meeting with the federal government were an increase in the proposed N60,000 minimum wage and a commitment to implement this within a week.
This agreement marked a significant improvement from the National Assembly leadership’s earlier proposal on Sunday, June 2, which suggested an eight-week timeframe.
On Monday, June 3, an agreement was reached between the federal government and organized labor, including the TUC and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for a new minimum wage above N60,000.
This agreement came after labor unions initiated an indefinite nationwide strike to demand a living wage.
George Akume, SGF, summarized the meeting’s resolutions, stating, “President Tinubu is committed to a national minimum wage that is higher than N60,000.”.……..See More
