According to a report by The Times Of Israel on July 22, 2026, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington has not abandoned diplomatic efforts with Iran despite the ongoing conflict. He stressed that the United States remains willing to pursue negotiations aimed at ending hostilities, while making it clear that any peaceful resolution must not come at the expense of international security or freedom of navigation in the Gulf region.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio reaffirmed the US position by saying, “We remain open to diplomacy,” signaling that dialogue is still viewed as an important option for reducing tensions. However, he emphasized that Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz remain a major concern for the United States and its allies.
Rubio argued that allowing Iran to dictate maritime access through the strategic waterway would pose a serious threat to global trade and international stability. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, carrying a significant share of global oil exports and commercial cargo each day.
He said, “Iran is targeting global shipping and an international waterway and demanding to control which ships can go and which ones cannot. That just is unacceptable. We’re not going to accept that. We’re not going to allow that to be the status quo. But ultimately, there are other countries that should feel just as strongly as we do.”
