The embassy said the United States, which recently marked the 250th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence, could not understand the significance of the public mourning because it “neither has a civilisation, history, nor honour.”
The embassy also paid tribute to Khamenei, describing his legacy as enduring despite his death.
“People can be killed, but ideals cannot. You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality, you broke a perfume bottle whose scent spread everyplace,” the statement said.
Trump’s comments were made in an interview with Axios, where he questioned the scale of public mourning in Iran, saying he had believed many Iranians opposed Khamenei. “I thought people hated Khamenei.
Maybe it’s fake tears,” Trump said. He also claimed that senior Iranian officials attending the funeral could be targeted “with one shot” but added that the United States would not take such action because it wanted diplomatic negotiations with Tehran to continue.
