As reported by Al Jazeera, on Monday, April 20, 2026, Iran has stated that it will not pursue a second set of negotiations with the United States after US forces took control of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Arabian Sea.
This announcement from Tehran indicates a significant increase in tensions just days after the US initiated a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
During a press conference on Monday, Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, addressed the diplomatic consequences that arose from this occurrence.
“Due to the United States government’s recent act of piracy towards an Iranian cargo ship, I declare that there will be no further negotiations,” Baghaei informed the media.
He criticized the seizure as a breach of international law and an aggressive move that jeopardizes any chance for diplomatic resolution.
This declaration follows the action taken by the US Navy’s guided-missile destroyer, the USS Spruance, which engaged and incapacitated the M/V Touska on Sunday.
US officials noted that the intervention came after the ship failed to heed several warnings and tried to cross the blockade.
Following this, US Marines boarded and assumed control of the vessel; the initial peace talks aimed at reducing tensions broke down on April 13, leading the US to establish the naval blockade.
President Trump justified the seizure by stating that the ship was halted for not adhering to commands.
Baghaei’s firm rejection of continuing discussions indicates a tougher stance from Iran.
Now, the global community is closely monitoring the situation for possible responses from Tehran, which has previously signaled that it might react to what it perceives as American aggression.
