Iran Believes It Has Won The First Phase Of The War; They Believe The New Ayatollah Is Secure -Buccino

Retired U.S. Army Colonel and former CENTCOM Communications Director, Joe Buccino, has said that Iran’s decision to shut down the Strait of Hormuz reflects a belief within the country that it has already secured an early strategic advantage in the ongoing conflict.

Speaking on Fox News on Sunday, April 19, 2026, Buccino argued that Iran’s posture is shaped by its perception that it has successfully navigated the initial phase of the confrontation, particularly by leveraging its control over one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

 

According to him, the closure of the strait through which a significant portion of the global oil supply flows, has provided Iran with geopolitical leverage, reinforcing its confidence despite mounting economic pressure and international scrutiny.

According to him, “Iran believes it has won the first phase of the war. The regime believes it will remain intact, and they believe the new Supreme Leader is secure. They understand the leverage they have in closing the Strait of Hormuz.
