Maoboye Nangi, a political analyst and secretary general of the Ijaw Council, has said Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara made an agreement to President Bola Tinubu that he would not seek reelection but would support whoever emerges as the APC candidate for the governorship race in the state.
Speaking on News Central TV, Nangi made this assertion while reacting to Fubara’s decision not to seek re-election. He said Fubara’s decision was not about fear of losing the election.
He explained that the governor had known all along that he would not run and had instead been moving with other governors, including the governor of Imo State, to try to overturn the agreement he had entered into. He said when those attempts failed, and it became clear there was no way out, Fubara had to accept the situation.
He accused Fubara of maintaining a public posture of wanting to run while privately bound by the understanding that he had agreed not to run, calling it dishonest to the people who supported him.
He added that many supporters, himself included, now regret supporting the governor because of the risks and conflicts they endured. According to Nangi, Fubara acts only in his own interest and has a history of not keeping to agreements.
He warned that even after stepping aside for the governorship race, the governor can still try to undermine the agreement made with the president by working against it behind the scenes.
In his words, “So it’s not that he saw defeat. He met a brickwall for trying to abrogate what he had earlier agreed upon. And let me tell you this. Those whom he had agreed with; there’s an agreement that he was going to work for them.”
“He agreed with the president that he’s going to work for the candidate that will come on. But he’s going to scuttle that plan. He’s going to do things to stymie whatever plans, and they should watch him because he’s good at doing things. He’s good at not keeping to agreements…….See More
