As stated in the Times of Israel on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, former US president Barack Obama indicated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu employed the same reasoning he had used years before to convince Donald Trump to take military action against Iran.
In a conversation with The New Yorker, Obama thought back on his conversations with Netanyahu and voiced uncertainty about whether military intervention could solve Iran’s problems at that time.
Considering the current climate, he suggested that many of the substantial losses criticized during the negotiations of the 2015 nuclear agreement still hold relevance, even with the recent assaults.
“I believe my forecast was correct,” he said.
Nonetheless, Obama seemed to tread carefully after making this statement, expressing skepticism about whether the results truly align with larger national interests. He recognized that Netanyahu may have reached a long-sought goal by swaying decisions in Washington, but he questioned whether the outcomes would ultimately benefit Israel or the United States.
