Amnesty International has released a report detailing the experiences of girls who survived Boko Haram captivity and military abuses in north-east Nigeria.
The report, titled “Help us build our lives,” revealed the horrific abuses suffered by these girls, including abduction, forced marriage, enslavement, violence, and trafficking.
According to Daily Trust on Monday, the report is based on 126 interviews, including 82 with survivors, conducted between 2019 and 2024.
According to the report, at least 33 survivors of forced marriage reported being abused by their “husbands,” while others were beaten and abused for refusing their captors.
The report also details the public punishments meted out by Boko Haram, including lashings, amputations, and beheadings, which were designed to instill fear and exert control.
One survivor, GH, who spent around a decade in captivity, recounted the traumatic experiences she witnessed, including the stoning of women and the display of corpses.
GH who is now in her 20s said, “Sometimes I dream about the corpses that I saw or the stoning of the women that I saw. Once I open my eyes, I can’t go back to sleep again.”
Amnesty International’s Regional Director, Samira Daoud, urged the Nigerian government and its international partners to provide increased specialist support to these survivors.
Samira Daoud said, “These girls have shown remarkable bravery, and it is now time for the government to take responsibility for their care and support.”..……..See More
