According to Vanguard, the Federal Government’s negotiating team has yet to present a new offer to the Technical Committee on the New National Minimum Wage (NNMW) as the deadline for concluding negotiations approaches.
With only five days remaining before the deadline, the delay in offering a proposal beyond the initial N60,000 has caused unrest within the labor movement.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, raised eyebrows by accusing labor of committing treason for shutting down the national grid during the recent strike, which was suspended on Tuesday.
Despite high expectations for a new offer above the initial N60,000, no fresh proposal has been made, disappointing labor leaders.
Although the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget, Atiku Bagudu, met with President Bola Tinubu to discuss a template earlier in the day, no concrete offer was presented.
A source familiar with the situation revealed that the government team requested further discussions and established a technical committee, possibly awaiting President Tinubu’s decision based on the figures presented.
Expressing concern over the delay, a labor leader voiced skepticism, hoping not to revisit the frustrations experienced on Monday.
In a surprising development, SGF Akume condemned labor’s actions, labeling the shutdown of the national grid as treason and economic sabotage.
Despite the government’s efforts to alleviate economic hardships with initiatives like compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and rice distribution, the stalemate in minimum wage negotiations persists.
Akume called for collaboration between the government and the church to provide essential infrastructure, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between the two entities.
As tensions escalate amid the ongoing standoff, the fate of minimum wage negotiations remains uncertain, with both labor and government striving for a resolution amidst differing perspectives and challenges.……..See More
