The Federal Government has earnestly appealed to Nigerians to refrain from the nationwide protest planned for Wednesday, August 1. Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made this plea during a world press conference held in Abuja, which was attended by key federal government officials according to Vanguard News.
Senator Akume emphasized that protests are not a viable solution to the current challenges faced by the nation. He reiterated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working tirelessly to address these issues, with economic prosperity as its ultimate goal.
“Economic prosperity is the engine that drives progress, lifts families from poverty, and builds strong, resilient societies,” Akume stated. He highlighted the necessity of peace and stability for these goals to be achieved, noting that peace is essential for policies to yield results, businesses to thrive, investments to flourish, and creativity to be unleashed.
Akume acknowledged that the administration inherited an economy in dire need of bold and imaginative reforms, including the removal of an unsustainable fuel subsidy regime. These measures, while necessary, have led to unexpected adjustments impacting all aspects of the economy and daily life.
In response to the economic challenges, the administration has taken several steps to alleviate the burden on citizens. These include releasing five billion Naira to each state, a wage award of thirty-five thousand Naira for six months, and the enactment of a new National Minimum Wage Act prescribing seventy thousand Naira, retroactive to April. Additionally, the government has removed tariffs on imported food items, provided subsidized farm inputs, and established the Ministry for Livestock Development to boost agricultural production.
The Federal Government also highlighted ongoing infrastructure development, social safety net programs benefiting over 15 million families, and efforts to achieve local government autonomy as part of its broader strategy to foster economic growth and stability.
Akume concluded by urging Nigerians to pursue peace, dialogue, and collaboration in addressing the nation’s challenges, and to avoid actions that could disturb the peace. “Together, we shall create a Nigeria where peace and stability are not merely aspirations but realities,” he assured….Seē _ Morē
