A Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Senator Adams Oshiomhole speaking about the Local Government autonomy has recounted his role in organizing a mass protest against states misappropriating local government revenues during his tenure as NLC President.
He stated that as the governor of Edo State, he insisted that local governments manage their resources autonomously, emphasizing the non-negotiable priority of paying primary school teachers. He proudly shared that he also refrained from approving any financial requests from local governments, advocating for their self-management.
He said in an interview with Channels TV, ”I organized a mass protest against those states pocketing the revenues of LG as NLC President. And when I was governor of Edo state, the only thing I did was to say you have your resources, manage it based on the localities of your area. But there is one thing that is non-negotiable, you must prioritize the payment of primary school teachers. Because all the heart of our future is the issue of basic education.
So I said don’t bring anything to me to approve, I never approved anything. Again this is something I’m very proud about, I inherited all 18 of PDP controlled local government. People said I should dissolve the local government because of the way they write the election results. But I said to myself that once the court have legitimized the election, we will rather let them run out their tenure.”….Seē _ Morē
