Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has attributed the current democratic freedoms enjoyed by Nigerians to the ultimate sacrifices made by Kudirat Abiola, the late wife of MKO Abiola. Atiku highlighted Kudirat Abiola’s role in the struggle for democracy, honoring her as a timeless heroine in Nigeria’s history.
According to a report by Daily Post, Atiku took to social media platform X on the 28th anniversary of Kudirat Abiola’s assassination to pay tribute to her enduring legacy. He wrote, “Today, as always, I remember Alhaja (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola, the wife of Bashorun MKO Abiola, on the 28th anniversary of her assassination.”
Kudirat Abiola was assassinated on June 4, 1996, during a critical period in Nigeria’s political history. Her husband, MKO Abiola, was the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was widely considered one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. Following MKO Abiola’s incarceration by the military regime, Kudirat emerged as a leading figure in the pro-democracy movement, symbolizing the struggle for the actualization of the June 12 mandate.
Atiku emphasized the profound impact of Kudirat’s activism on Nigeria’s democratic landscape. “Following the incarceration of MKO, his wife stepped into the fray to symbolise the struggle for democracy and the restoration of the June 12 mandate,” he noted. Her courageous efforts and leadership during this tumultuous time have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political evolution.
Kudirat Abiola’s assassination was a dark chapter in Nigeria’s fight for democracy. At a panel of inquiry set up to investigate her death, Sergeant Rogers, a member of the strike force, confessed to participating in her assassination, bringing to light the violent measures taken by the regime to suppress the pro-democracy movement. Kudirat’s legacy has continued to inspire generations of Nigerians committed to democratic principles and human rights.
Atiku’s tribute underlines the importance of remembering and honoring those who fought for Nigeria’s democracy. He stated, “Her activism and leadership marked her as a heroine of all time. The democracy we enjoy today was only made possible by the sacrifices of people like her, who paid the ultimate price. May her soul continue to rest in eternal peace.”.……..See More
