Students of the University of Ibadan staged a protest on Wednesday against the recent increase in tuition fees and power supply rationing.
The protesters, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), donned masks to conceal their identities and some blocked the school’s main entrance, while others gathered around the Senate Building.
During an interview with NAN, a 200-level Political Science student expressed concerns about the economic challenges faced by Nigerians and urged the Federal Government and the school authorities to support citizens in accessing education.
He highlighted the financial strain caused by the rise in school fees, with some students even considering dropping out due to the increased costs.
The student emphasized the need for education subsidies, pointing out that current fees were unaffordable for many.
Notably, students in different departments are facing varying fee structures, with Psychology students now required to pay N140,000 and Political Science students facing fees around N80,000. Some departments have fees exceeding N300,000, adding to the frustration among students.
“According to The Nation, The Student said,
“The present school fees are too much for us; we can’t afford it. We need education subsidy.
“Those studying Psychology are now to pay N140,000, while those in Political Science are paying about N80,000. There are some other departments that are paying more than N300,000.
“There is so much anger among the students, but this is a peaceful protest to call on the federal government and the school management.”….Seē _ Morē
