In a bold move to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, communities in the Niger Delta region have threatened to cripple oil production in the area, as reported by Vanguard.
Under the auspices of the Association of Niger Delta Upland Communities, Kanu has been detained in solitary confinement at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in June 2021. The threat was made during this period.
In a statement signed by Secretary Wisdom Oteyi and President Isah Mohammed Obiri of the organization, the communities demanded that the Federal Government “quickly initiate moves for a political solution to Kanu’s matter.
“Vanguard got a copy of the statement, which threatened to “stop oil production in Niger Delta until Kanu, who it said, is unjustly persecuted, is released.
“This shutdown has been in effect since September 21, 2023, leading to significant financial losses for the Federal Government amounting to over N14.5 trillion over the past eight months,” said the statement.
