Human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has stated that the current Nigerian system is unsustainable and that the revolution against President Bola Tinubu’s government will emerge from the Northern region. In an interview, Farotimi noted that the average Igbo person has learned to be self-sufficient and not depend on the government, making them better equipped to cope with the current circumstances.
Farotimi questioned why the North, which tolerated many things during Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, is no longer willing to do so. “Why is it that all of a sudden, everything they tolerated in all the years of Muhammadu Buhari is no longer tolerable?” he asked.
He predicted that the Nigerian revolution would start in Northern Nigeria, citing the suffering and democratisation of pain under President Tinubu’s government. Farotimi emphasized that the Igbo people have learned to survive without relying on the government, unlike other regions.
“The Igbo man was already prepared for the uselessness of the government… He didn’t enjoy anything from the beginning,” Farotimi said. “Average Igbo man on the street grew up believing that he has no portion in Nigeria, which was what fed the Biafran spirit and demand for Biafra even 50 years after the civil war.”
Farotimi believes that the revolution will not start in Eastern Nigeria but will emerge from the Northern streets, where the suffering has become unbearable.
