According to Channels Television, a group of lawmakers in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere from Ideato Federal Constituency, has proposed significant amendments to the 1999 Constitution. On Monday, the Reform Minded Legislators introduced a series of reforms aimed at enhancing governance and reducing political tensions.
The key proposal is to replace the current two-term limit for the President and the 36 state governors with a single six-year tenure. The group argues that this change would streamline governance and reduce the financial burden of campaigns. Ugochinyere stated, “Our proposal for a six-year single tenure for the President and state governors will help reduce the cost of governance and campaigns, unite the country, ensure a seamless transition, and foster uninterrupted development.”
Additionally, the group suggested creating two Vice Presidential offices. One Vice President would come from the Southern region and the other from the Northern region. The first Vice President would be designated as the Succession VP, while the second VP would focus on economic affairs. Both would serve as ministers, ensuring a balanced representation and management of the country’s economic policies.
To enhance electoral processes, the lawmakers also proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022. They suggested that all governorship elections be held on the same day to simplify the electoral timeline and reduce logistical challenges.
The Reform Minded Legislators, consisting of about 30 members, believe these constitutional amendments will also address issues such as nepotism, state capture, and corruption. They are advocating for a rotation of executive powers among the six geopolitical zones to ensure equitable representation and mitigate regional tensions.
Among other proposals, the group called for constitutional changes to ensure that the President and the first Vice President are from the same geographical part of the country. This measure aims to provide a clear line of succession in case of presidential incapacity. Furthermore, they seek to grant financial autonomy and accountability to Local Government Councils through the creation of an independent Consolidated Local Government Council Account, and impose stringent penalties for any misuse of local funds.…….See More
