Several reactions have surfaced online after the Labour Party, LP candidate in the Lagos state 2023 governorship election, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour explained the meaning of the popular statement “Lagos is not a no man’s land”.
In a post that Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour made on his official X handle, he said the statement has never been about if Lagos is a Yoruba state but about Lagos indigenes fighting for their rights to govern themselves. He said the statement has dated back to 1970 when General Mobolaji Johnson used it to respond to some Action Group politicians who had spent years trying to completely absorb Lagos state.
He wrote on his page;
“General Mobolaji Johnson emphatically stated that “Lagos is not a no man’s land,” while responding to Action Group politicians who had spent the last decade trying to completely absorb Lagos State into the western region in 1970. This conversation has never been about if Lagos state is Yoruba land. It has since 1886 been about Lagos indigenes fighting for the right to govern themselves, asserting that they are neither vassals or conquered territory”.
