After turning twenty-five, on April 29, 1992, Strasser, who was born on April 26, 1967, assumed office as president of Sierra Leone.
Nevertheless, unlike most African presidents, Valentine Strasser did not grow up in a wealthy or privileged family.Though many wealthy Africans who become powerful do not have the same high education, 56-year-old Strasser did.
After graduating from high school, Strasser joined the army at the age of eighteen. Eight years later, as the head of state, he slept and ate in the State House.
After almost four years in charge during the second military revolution in Sierra Leone, Strasser was ousted from office. 1996 saw the appointment of Brigadier General Julias Maada.
After his disgrace, Strasser was awarded a scholarship by the UN to study law in England. Strasser did exceptionally well in science and maths in high school. He was a former president who decided to go back to school. However, he only stayed at the University of Warwick for eighteen months.
In 2000, Strasser asked England to grant him protection, but they declined. They turned him away as he attempted to enter the Gambia.
Finally, feeling completely shattered and forlorn, the former head of state went to Sierra Leone, now without a home or a country. He was really poor and received very little retirement income there.
Given his low income, Strasser decided to accept a job at an institute teaching computer skills to youth.
Strasser was transported to Ghana for medical care in January 2019, following a critical illness. Doctors had to remove a part of the body because of a blood vessel problem.
