In response to Thursday’s nationwide protests, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun declared that a policeman had been killed and his men are now on red alert.
Daily Trust reported that Egbetokun stated during a press conference on Thursday night that some officers were hurt during the protest and that some stations were destroyed. He referred to the events of Thursday as a mass uprising.
Quoting him, “Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses.”
“In places like FCT, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, among others, we recorded incidents of unprovoked attacks on our security personnel where one policeman has been reported murdered and others seriously injured.”
“In light of the current situation, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert. Our officers are fully mobilized and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to public safety and order.”
“While recognizing the citizens’ right to protest, he stressed that such activities must abide by constitutional rules and responsibilities to the state.”
To restore order and stop the situation from getting worse, he asked for patience and made a suggestion that the army might be called in.
