Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has raised concerns about the government’s recent actions in light of an upcoming protest.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he accused the government of trying to create fear among the population by leveraging various arms of government, a strategy he considers inappropriate.
In his statement, Gabam criticised the government’s approach, suggesting that their actions are meant to intimidate and suppress dissent.
He emphasised the need for a measured and balanced response to public concerns rather than resorting to fear-mongering tactics.
According to Gabam, the language and actions employed by the government can significantly impact the situation’s outcome, and the current approach could be counterproductive.
Gabam also expressed his surprise at the suggestion of involving the military in handling the situation.
He acknowledged that the military’s role is to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and defend against external threats.
However, he argued that the current circumstances do not justify such drastic measures.
He questioned the appropriateness of raising alarms and involving the military when the situation does not appear to warrant it.
The SDP chairman’s comments come amid growing tension and anticipation of the planned protest.
Gabam urged the government to adopt a more balanced approach, focusing on addressing the underlying issues driving the protest rather than resorting to intimidation.
He called for open dialogue and engagement with the populace to find sustainable solutions to the grievances being raised.
According to Gabam, a democratic government should prioritise listening to its citizens and responding constructively to their concerns, rather than using fear as a tool of control.
Gabam Shehu said, “It’s a clear signal that the government is in panic mode. They are trying to use every arm of government to create fear in the minds of the people.
“And for me, that is not the right thing to do. The entire mode of government is about diplomacy; it’s about humanity, and it’s about humility.
“Your approach in solving issue and the rhetoric you use will determine how far it will go. I don’t expect the Army to come out yet, even though they have the right if the red line has been crossed.
“They have the power to safeguard the territorial integrity of Nigeria and to deter external influence that can be used to undermine the country.
“But I think the situation has not reached the level at which they are raising the alarm.”….Seē _ Morē
