Chief Chuku Wachuku, the first Director General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), has expressed strong support for the establishment of Etiti State as the designated equalization state for the South East geopolitical zone. His endorsement aligns with the consensus reached by delegates from the region during the 2014 National Constitutional Conference, emphasizing the need for a state that promotes balance and equity among the Southeast states.
The proposed bill, co-sponsored by Hon. Amobi Ogah, the representative for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency, along with several colleagues from the region, successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday. This legislative progress marks a significant step forward in the push for Etiti State’s creation.
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard in Umuahia, Chief Wachuku commended Hon. Ogah and other advocates for their commitment to this initiative. He reiterated that the consensus from the 2014 Conference was unambiguous: “Etiti State was to be regarded as the parity state for the South East before any other proposals could be entertained.”
Reflecting on his participation in the conference, Chief Wachuku noted, “I was a senior member of the South East delegates, led by Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd.). Our collective recommendation for an additional state in the South East was explicit.” He revealed that the joint recommendation prioritized Etiti State, with Aba State identified as the next in line. He pointed out that Aba is the only old province in Nigeria yet to attain state status, underscoring its significance.
Wachuku further urged those promoting alternative state proposals to consider the broader regional interest rather than individual ambitions. “Advocates for states other than Etiti are not prioritizing the collective needs of the region,” he asserted, urging unity in the pursuit of equitable development.
The call for Etiti State reflects a broader effort to address historical imbalances and promote fair development within the South East, paving the way for a more equitable future for its residents….Seē _ Morē
