Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, has slammed the Nigerian government for its extravagance and lack of priorities. In an interview with Arise News, he criticized the decision to spend over 20 billion naira on building a new vice presidential residence, while millions of Nigerians remain homeless.
Obi pointed out the stark contrast between Nigeria’s lavish spending and the more modest living arrangements of leaders in other countries, like the UK’s Prime Minister, who resides in a three-room apartment at 10 Downing Street. He emphasized that Nigeria’s economy is significantly smaller than the UK’s, yet its leaders insist on living extravagantly.
Obi called for a change in leadership behavior, urging them to prioritize the country’s pressing issues, such as homelessness, corruption, and excessive government spending. He stressed the need to cut costs and address corruption, rather than indulging in luxuries like expensive vehicles and lavish parties.
In his words;
“Nigeria today, is a country with the highest amount of people without homes. Yet, you’re spending 20 something billion to build a house for one person. A vice president of Nigeria cannot live in a four bedroom house. You live in the UK, 10 Downing Street is 3 rooms. That’s an economy that is almost 10x our Economy today and the prime minister live in three rooms. So that’s the way you start, you start living like somebody who’s facing difficulty, who want to change things, you don’t engage in what they’ve been doing, buying vehicles, parties and everything as if they’re normal. You need to deal with the issue of cutting the cost of governance and massive corruption”..……..See More
