According to the report from the Vanguard, Kalabari prince, Tonye Princewill, is a politician, film producer, and philanthropist who was the Labour Party candidate for Governor of Rivers State in 2015 and the Action Congress candidate in 2007.
On July 12, 2022, Princewill left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in protest over the party’s decision to adopt a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket. An influential member of the APC in Rivers State, Princewill was a close ally of former Transportation Minister Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
In an interview, Princewill discussed the political crisis in Rivers State and why President Bola Tinubu’s intervention did not resolve the issue. He also commented on some policies of the current administration and concluded that President Tinubu might need to rethink his strategies if he desires a second term.
When asked to appraise the Tinubu administration’s performance over the past year, Princewill responded, “First of all, one year is too soon. But through no deliberate fault of their own, I didn’t expect much from this administration.” He explained, “Nigeria’s problems are bigger than who is the President. That is why we seem destined to keep on complaining. It stems also from who is Governor, who is in the National Assembly, and who is in the Judiciary.”
Princewill acknowledged the President’s role in driving efforts for change but emphasized the necessity of widespread public involvement: “I agree that the President can and should drive the efforts, but where we are, only ‘people power’ can overcome the obstacles I listed. If we had credible polls, you would see that the people are not with the President, even more so now that the economy is the way it is and hardship is wearing ‘agbada’.”
He further elaborated on the public’s distrust of the government: “My people say ‘dog no dey chop dog,’ and so no President can convince the public that he or she has their backs, unless they do not see them as part of the system. This President and the system are seen as 5 and 6. He is not doing enough to change that.”
Through his remarks, Princewill underscored the complexities of Nigeria’s political and economic landscape and the challenges facing the Tinubu administration..…….See More
