According to Punch Newspaper, Segun Showunmi, former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation and a national chairmanship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently discussed the significance of Atiku Abubakar’s visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State. Showunmi’s remarks also touched on broader issues within the PDP, reflecting on past challenges and future aspirations.
In the 2023 presidential elections, several PDP governors acted contrary to the party’s interests by opposing its presidential candidate. Despite this internal conflict, no punitive measures have been taken against these governors. This situation raises concerns about the potential for similar disunity and disloyalty in the upcoming 2027 elections. Showunmi’s perspective on this issue emphasizes the need for internal party reforms to prevent a recurrence of such events.
Showunmi has expressed his desire to become the national chairman of the PDP, citing his deep understanding of the party’s core issues and his familiarity with its key players. He believes that his consistent efforts to advocate for internal reforms position him well to lead the party towards positive change. Showunmi’s vision for the PDP involves a comprehensive internal transformation aimed at revitalizing the party’s approach and operations.
Showunmi stated that he has asked to be the national chairman of the party because he understands the fundamental issues and knows the players, who also know him. He has been consistent in advocating for internal reforms, believing that reforming the party from the inside does not mean trying to influence who will be the leader.
In his own words, he remarked, “I have asked them to let me be the national chairman of this party because I understand the fundamental issues; I know the players and they also know me. I have been very consistent in trying to tell them that a political party must reform itself from the inside. For you to reform a political party, you will reform it from the inside, and reforming does not mean you are trying to influence who will be the leader or not.”….Seē _ Morē
